May - June 2003
The Hungarian Art Nouveau New Synagogue (Uj Zsinagoga), built in 1903, often referred to as the most beautiful Jewish house of worship in Hungary. The synagogue was apparently closed in preparation for its centenary and I was granted the privilege on taking photos for a short time only.
exterior It was incredibly huge and so I was prevented from taking a photo of it in its entirety. |
interior The interior was primarily blue and gold. The words "Love thy neighbour as thyself" was written in Hungarian on the left side and in Hebrew on the right side. The altar houses a replica of the ark of the Covenant, and there is a huge pipe organ at the back. |
closer [new] A closer look at the interior, with lights on (activated by the generous deposit of 100Ft into a box within the Synagogue, lasting for approximately 2 minutes). |
window There were stained glass windows all around, laden with Jewish symbols. On the left here are a set of scrolls, and on the right is a depiction of Rachel's tomb. |
ceiling [new] The ceiling, too, was blue and gold and bore various letterings in Hebrew. |
